After the Normandy Landings of June 1944, the theatre of war in Europe changed dramatically, however the rapid defeat of the Germans as they retreated from France was not as quick as expected with the German army capitalizing on the Allies caution and lack of wider strategy. The Germans dug in and used their skill and energy to maintain a presence in many towns and cities across northern Europe making Allied progress slow and painful.
