The game begins with a toss-up puzzle, where the first contestant to buzz in with the correct answer earns a cash prize and the right to start the main round. Each main round revolves around a new puzzle hidden on the famous electronic board.
Spin the Wheel: The active contestant starts their turn by spinning the giant, colorful wheel. This wheel is segmented with various dollar amounts (ranging from $500 to the "Million Dollar Wedge"), special wedges like "Bankrupt" (losing all accumulated cash for that round) and "Lose a Turn" (forfeiting the current turn), and other valuable elements like "Free Play" or "Wild Card."
Guess a Consonant: After spinning and landing on a dollar amount, the contestant must call out a consonant. If the letter appears in the puzzle, Vanna White reveals all instances of that letter on the board, and the contestant earns the dollar amount multiplied by the number of times the letter appears. For example, if they land on $600 and guess 'T', and there are three 'T's, they earn $1,800.
Buy a Vowel: Once a contestant has at least $250 in their bank for that round, they can choose to "buy a vowel" (A, E, I, O, U) for a flat fee of $250. Vowels are revealed, but no money is earned for them. This strategic move can help reveal more of the puzzle.
Solve the Puzzle: A contestant can attempt to solve the puzzle at any point during their turn. If they correctly identify the phrase, they win all the money and prizes they've accumulated in that round. An incorrect guess, however, results in losing their turn.
Passing the Turn: A turn can end if a contestant lands on "Bankrupt" or "Lose a Turn," guesses an incorrect letter, or fails to solve the puzzle correctly. The game then passes to the next contestant.
After a series of rounds, including specific "Mystery" and "Express" rounds in later gameplay, the contestant with the highest total cash and prizes advances to the coveted Bonus Round. Here, the contestant spins a smaller wheel to determine their potential prize (ranging from cars and trips to significant cash amounts). They are given a category and a puzzle with some letters already revealed (R, S, T, L, N, E). They then choose three more consonants and one vowel to be revealed before having 10 seconds to solve the puzzle and claim their prize.
