Although oil had been found in the old west centuries ago, modern oil production began in 1859 following the discovery of oil in Pennsylvania by George Bissell and Edwin L. Drake in that year leading to further discoveries in the western Appalachian mountains. Obviously this discovery preceeded the advent of the motor vehicle and its use was mainly for the illumnination of kerosene lamps, which had previoulsy used whale oil. Production of 2000 barrels in 1859 surged to 10,000,000 barrels by 1873, giving Pennsylvania its own version of the Californian Gold Rush, with much of the oil be transported to an increasingly industrialised Europe.
